When I was growing up, Memorial Day always signaled the day the pools opened, that school was almost over, and the official beginning of summer! Wahoo!
After serving in the Navy, it came to mean so much more to me.
Memorial Day is a day where we stop and remember those that died while serving in the Armed Forces of the United States. Originally it started to commemorate the fallen soldiers after the Civil War. Now it honors all military who have given the ultimate price.
When Memorial Day rolls around, I can’t help but think of some of the extraordinary people I met while serving in the military. The people I served with were very much like the same type of extraordinary people that gave their lives in all previous conflicts, just so that we could barbecue and go swimming.
This Memorial Day weekend, I ask that you pause as you are enjoying time with your family and friends, and think about those that fought so hard for the freedoms we will enjoy this special weekend.
